You may have noticed that there hasn't been much updating. I've been busy with that stuff called life which involves kids, wives, football, red wine. I've looked to only put up stuff I can't readily see elsewhere and with so many good blogs around I'll admit I'm struggling to do that. It seems you can get most of the good stuff out there, and the bad!

Which brings me to the starlings, a name by which Chris Starling recorded a few eps and a couple of albums. And wait for it, I've not seen this posted elsewhere, the first EP which has five tracks and is on rather crackly vinyl. It features a rather splendid cover of Wasn't Born To Follow, and there are no fillers here.

It's been a short while since I posted. I've had a very enjoyable holiday followed by a few days of battling hayfever and now I'm going cold turkey with the cigarettes (Day 4 and counting!).

The Man From Delmonte were a band quite like no other. Jangly pop with an incredibly camp front man (especially for an aussie living in Manchester). Believe you me, late eighties manchester was not a place to be camp in.

The band didn't record much more than a handful of singles and an Lp and then split, which i thought was a bit of a shame at the time. Good band live with great t-shirts as well!

This is the cassette version of the single with two extra tracks added.

Can I just say I've only just seen comments from some of you on some of my earlier posts and I do apologise for not getting back to you.

A few of you have asked about whether I have any more music paper freebie tapes. I'm not sure I have too many left upstairs although I can never be quite sure what we have in this house as my family aren't the tidiest!

I have managed to find another one which I hope to post up later, which I believe belongs to Mrs M.

Early nineties Manchester wasn't all about baggy beats. I remember seeing them support the Bodines at the Boardwalk. They were clearly influenced by The Smiths and that may have limited their appeal when straight guitar bands were no longer the thing in the city. Coloured vinyl. Is there a more bizarre gimic to get you to buy the same recordings twice?

In the late eighties/early nineties those bands were deemed as possible crossover acts from indie to mainstream were thought to need that little extra push. Multi formatting such as 2 cds, 7" gatefold sleeves, 10" releases, remix 12" etc. This would allow bands toenter the chart at number 24 rather than number 41 as you and I went out to buy additional formats that had one extra track! It was eventually outlawed as a practice that counted for chart purposes and quite right too!

The Primitives were a band that RCA felt needed more formats than anyone else. The only difference between this and the normal 12" was one extra track. Astounding capitalism.

Wishplants - Tortoiseshell EP

Remember Wishplants? No? Well neither do I!

I found a box of records today with all sorts of goodies/monstrosities in it. I'm of the opinion that this will probably have been a 50p buy from a clearance shelf, and/or I'll possibly have seem them support another band.

So who are they? They appear to be a rock band possibly originating from Northamptonshire. As far as I'm aware they didn't get to marry super models or share anecdotes with Eddie Van Halen.

What do I think of it? I can take it or leave it, but as this band do not appear to be posted elsewhere I thought I'd put it up just in case a passing Wishplants fan should see it and reclaim it, in a kind of Bagpuss fashion.

Even weirder for a band I don't remember is that I appear to have another EP by them!

Crazyhead - Desert Orchid

I've never quite sure whether to write or not write about the music on here. I've not really come to any firm conclusion as to whether the music should speak for itself and these are just inane ramblings, or the job of a blogger is to actually say something.

Crazyhead were a rock band from Leicester in the late 80s/early 90s, casually labelled into a scene known as 'grebo' for bands who came from the midlands, looked scruffy, long haired, had funny accents etc. It never seemed to make much sense as a musical category. Whilst many of the bands may have known each other personally, what musically connected the Wonder Stuff with Crazyhead? Very little.

Anyway, back to Crazyhead. I was a little disappointed when this album came out, feeling that some of the rough edges had been smoothed out but its still a decent listen.

I haven't posted for a week due to a combination of ipod malfunction, red wine and family life but I will be posting up some new stuff very shortly.

During this time, I have been able to have a look at a few blogs and update my collection. Why post up something when others have done it better?

Teenage Symphonies to God have been posting up the Creation Soup albums which has saved me the job of converting my vinyl copies of the same series!

Outdoor Miner have managed to place a number of C86 classics on their site including the Vinyl Japan releases from Mighty Mighty - very welcome!

Map Ref. 41 have a pretty comprehensive list of Go-Betweens releases.

And I've only just discovered This Roaring silence which has all manner of singles from all genres of music and appears to be an excellent site.

I'll try to get some items up that aren't covered elsewhere although it does appear that list will be shrinking due to the good work of others!

I first saw Out Of My Hair at a festival (Glastonbury?). I was wandering past a small stage, heard something, and went nearer to take a look. I was impressed. In The Groove again is a great little song and it was released later on as a single.

This tape was either sold to me then or at a later gig in Manchester. It appears to be quite rare, it being the band's own release (so you won't be able to get it on Amazon!), and the picture above (borrowed again) is not the original cover.

Underground was a fantastic music magazine in the late eighties that attempted to capitalise in music it considered to be 'non-mainstream'. It was packed full of reviews, articles and adverts for bands that most of the time you'd never hear of again.

Isn't the internet wonderful? Back in the eighties I used to tape John Peel shows on old c90 cassettes. Most of these cassettes are lost. I do still have a few but I don't actually currently own a working cassette player (might sort that out this weekend to get some more stuff on here).

Never did I ever imagine just how many other people were obviously doing the same, taping old radio sessions, hanging on to them and converting them into MP3s. It's been wonderful to get back copies of things that I thought I'd never hear again. The dedication of some of the chroniclers (is that a word?) of old Peel Sessions is to be much admired.

This session is indeed a session borrowed from somewhere else but worthy of another airing here.

Record Mirror was a weekly paper that seemed to be unduly influenced by the marketing departments of some rather unsuccessful major labels. This EP reflects that fully.

Love and Money and Diesel Park West were both very competent bands that some good tunes played well but always seemed destined to reach number 43 in the charts, no matter how many adverts were placed in the press, no matter how many times they were played on Simon Bates shows, or no matter how many times they appeared on the Radio 1 Road show live from Minehead!

If this was a promo for Andy Pawlak's album then I hate to think what the rest of his music sounded like. He looks like a hairdresser on the back of the sleeve. I wish him well with his cut and blow dry.

Please someone tell me who bought records by the Rainbirds. This is indescribably awful.

Back in the eighties, the UK had a thriving music press scene - the 3 big weekly papers - NME, Melody Maker and Sounds, magazines like Record Mirror and the the more teen led No. 1 and Smash Hits. There were also many indie magazines, fanzines, many of which were also short lived, and music featured heavily in other teen magazines. Sadly, music doesn't have quite the same coverage nowadays.

Of the big three papers, NME was regarded as the more cutting edge, Melody Maker the favourite of musicians, and Sounds was the paper that often was misguidedly labelled as the rockers paper. It's true that Sounds did cover rock very well but it also had a less snobby and more open minded attitude towards other genres as it appeared to be less wary of being labelled as out of step with musical fashions.

With such competition came give aways from various mags to get the music fan buying their paper. Looking through another cupboard of records I discovered a few of these giveaways that I'll put on here.

Sonic Sounds was a series of 3 EPs given away by Sounds the music paper. They were also recorded on bloody awful vinyl! Here is the first.

Back in the mid eighties Janice Long and John peel opened up my ears to all sorts of new music. Growing up in the sticks in a farmhouse, miles from civilisation, you might find it hard to appreciate just how welcome it was hearing tunes that you only dreamed would exist. So after a bit of taping of the latest sessions on the radio, you'd get up the next morning and make the long trip to the hallowed Action records in Preston.

A House were one of those bands that sounded nothing like anything else at the time. A clever lyricist, an edgy indie rock sound. They were just different from Brother Beyond!

They were never quite as commercially successful as they were critically acclaimed. Here's their first major release in the UK from 1987 on A Rip records.
